A 35-year-old man from Detroit, Michigan, received a stiff prison sentence for his role in distributing heroin in West Virginia. Keith Antonio Cohens was handed down a 78-month prison term for distributing heroin.
Cohens, a resident of Detroit, Michigan, transported heroin from his hometown to Monongalia County, West Virginia, where he distributed it to individuals. He pleaded guilty to one count of Distribution of Heroin in May 2016.
The heroin distribution case was investigated by the Mon Metro Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zelda E. Wesley prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley presided over the case and handed down the prison sentence. The sentencing took place in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
According to the prosecution, Cohens played a significant role in bringing heroin into Monongalia County, which has struggled with the opioid epidemic. The heroin distribution case is a prime example of the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in West Virginia.
Cohens’ prison sentence serves as a deterrent to others involved in heroin distribution. The prison term demonstrates the severity of the crime and the consequences of engaging in such activities.
The case against Cohens serves as a reminder of the importance of working together to combat the opioid epidemic. Law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and the courts must continue to work together to bring those responsible to justice.
