NEW ORLEANS, LA – A 41-year-old Orleans Parish man is facing serious charges after a recent indictment. Keith Caldwell was charged on January 31, 2025, in a three-count indictment for firearm and narcotics violations, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson.
Caldwell is accused of possession with the intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment alleges that on September 28, 2024, Louisiana State Police troopers and federal agents arrested Caldwell for violations of the Federal Controlled Substances Act while he was in possession of firearms.
Further investigation determined that Caldwell was prohibited from possessing firearms due to his prior felony conviction(s). If convicted, Caldwell faces up to 20 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $1,000,000, at least 3 years of supervised release for Count 1; a mandatory minimum of 5 years up to life imprisonment to run consecutive to any other sentence imposed, up to a $250,000 fine, and at least 5 years of supervised release for Count 2; and up to 15 years imprisonment, up to a $250,000 fine, and up to 3 years of supervised release for Count 3.
Caldwell also faces payment of a $100 mandatory special assessment fee as to all three counts. Acting United States Attorney Simpson reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Louisiana State Police. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Troy L. Bell of the Violent Crimes Unit.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the justice system to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
This operation streamlines efforts and resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
