Custer Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person
A 28-year-old Custer man, Kelly Campbell, has been sentenced to federal prison for violating federal firearms laws.
According to Acting United States Attorney Dennis R. Holmes, Campbell was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on July 30, 2021, by Judge Karen E. Schreier, U.S. District Court.
Campbell was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a charge stemming from his possession of a Browning Arms Company, model Nomad, .22 Long Rifle caliber, semi-automatic pistol. This firearm was found in Campbell’s possession after a pursuit by the Rapid City Police Department on March 20, 2020.
The conviction was made possible through the efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives and the Rapid City Police Department, which conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.
Campbell was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and the community. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
The investigation into Campbell’s case began after he was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 20, 2020.
Campbell pleaded guilty to the charge on April 30, 2021.
