A New Orleans man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in distributing fentanyl and illegally possessing a firearm.
KENTRELL HUBBARD, 25, of New Orleans, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Wendy B. Vitter on August 22, 2024, after previously pleading guilty to the crimes.
According to court documents, on June 9, 2023, a confidential informant for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) purchased fentanyl from HUBBARD after meeting him near a supermarket in the Iberville housing project, a known hotspot for drug trafficking.
The next week, special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) saw HUBBARD with a handgun as they were executing an unrelated search warrant.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. PSN is based on four core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
The case was investigated by the ATF. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit is in charge of the prosecution.
HUBBARD was sentenced to 70 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a $200 mandatory special assessment fee.
