A 38-year-old man from Kentwood, Louisiana, has been charged with failing to register as a sex offender, a crime that could land him in prison for up to 10 years and cost him a quarter of a million dollars.
KEITH J. PENDARVIS, a resident of Kentwood, was charged in a federal indictment by a Grand Jury for failing to register as a sex offender, announced U. S. Attorney Dana J. Boente.
If convicted of the failure to register charge, PENDARVIS faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years, a fine of $250,000 and up to 3 years of supervised release.
U. S. Attorney Boente reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the government to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the prosecution of this case is being handled by Project Safe Childhood Coordinator, Assistant U. S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba.
According to the indictment, PENDARVIS failed to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, which requires registered sex offenders to provide information to law enforcement and to verify their registration information on a regular basis.
