Bristol Man Sentenced for Failing to Register as Sex Offender
A 36-year-old man from Bristol, Va., has been sentenced to 41 months’ imprisonment for failing to register as a sex offender, according to court documents.
Scott Stewart Cammorto, 36, of Bristol, Va., was sentenced today in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Abingdon after previously pleading guilty to one count of knowingly failing to register as a sex offender in December 2015.
Cammorto was convicted in Georgia of rape and related offenses in 1999 and was required to register as a sex offender. However, when he moved to Virginia in 2014, he failed to update his registration in Georgia and did not register as a sex offender in Virginia, despite being arrested by Bristol, Virginia authorities in May 2015 after being involved in a domestic dispute.
“The registration and monitoring of sex offenders is an important tool for protecting the community and keeping our citizens safe,” said United States Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. “When individuals fail to fulfill their requirements under the rules of that system they must be held accountable.”
Cammorto will serve 41 months’ imprisonment followed by 8 years’ supervised release. The investigation of the case was conducted by the United States Marshals Service, and Special Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Jayne prosecuted the case for the United States.
Cammorto’s failure to register as a sex offender has serious consequences not only for himself but also for the community. His actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and a lack of accountability for his past crimes.
The case highlights the importance of sex offender registration and the need for individuals to comply with the requirements of the system. It also serves as a reminder that law enforcement will not tolerate those who fail to register and will aggressively pursue those who attempt to avoid their responsibilities.
