BIRMINGHAM – Kevin Maldonado, 35, a former Shelby County resident now residing in North Carolina, has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for his despicable act of hacking into over 50 women’s computers. He was caught intercepting personal data and explicit photographs, announced acting U.S. Attorney Robert O. Posey and FBI Special Agent in Charge Roger C. Stanton.
Maldonado faced Judge Abdul K. Kallon, who also ordered three years of supervised release after his prison term. The defendant is set to report to prison on July 17.
The government’s sentencing memorandum revealed that Maldonado had been “repeatedly and indiscriminately gaining access to multiple women’s computers for at least two years” using various methods, including creating fictitious email accounts to demand login information. He then used this data to gain further access to personal accounts.
Once inside the victims’ digital lives, Maldonado exploited their privacy, downloading sensitive information and photographs, including nude and sexual images. His motivations seemed to go beyond a mere desire for pornographic material; instead, his actions were driven by an “intentional need to violate others’ privacy,” as stated in the memorandum.
Maldonado meticulously catalogued his victims’ information, saving it on external hard drives for easy access. His actions highlighted the vulnerability of digital security and the increasing importance of protecting personal data in this age of digital living.
The FBI investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Barnes leading the prosecution. This sentence serves as a stark reminder that computer intrusions are serious crimes that must be punished accordingly to protect the public’s trust in technology.
