Local Woman Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud

Lynchburg, Virginia – On May 5, 2015, Kirsten Flynn Hawkins, 45, of Staunton, Virginia, pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia.

Hawkins, who worked as a financial advisor for a Staunton-based branch of Bank One, was charged with three separate counts of wire fraud. She faces a maximum possible penalty of up to 30 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $1,000,000 for each of the three charges.

According to evidence presented at the guilty plea hearing, Hawkins devised a scheme to defraud and obtain money through false representations and promises from Victim One’s bank and investment accounts. The funds were used to pay various living expenses, utilities, rent, travel, jewelry, clothing, eating out, and to provide other economic benefits for herself and her family.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the United States Secret Service. Assistant United States Attorney Daniel Bubar is prosecuting the case for the United States.

Hawkins’ plea agreement calls for restitution to be made to her victims in an amount of approximately $500,000.

“Through a series of lies and deceitful measures, Ms. Hawkins betrayed the trust of those who gave her control of their finances,” said Acting United States Attorney Anthony P. Giorno. “I only hope the restitution to be ordered by the court in this matter can restore to the victim the money which was stolen.”
