In a disturbing case, 24-year-old Kirtan Patel from India was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity. The case highlights the growing concern of online predators and the need for increased vigilance in protecting our children.
According to the plea agreement and court records, between May 22 and 24, 2024, Patel communicated online with someone whom he believed was a 13-year-old girl. The child, however, was an undercover Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent. Patel engaged in a sexually explicit conversation with the undercover agent.
Patel devised a plan to meet the minor for sexual activity, which ultimately led to his arrest when he traveled to a location in Marion County. At the time of the events, Patel was not lawfully present in the United States.
This case serves as a prime example of the dangers of online interactions and the importance of being cautious when engaging with individuals online. It is crucial for parents and guardians to monitor their children’s online activities and educate them on the risks associated with online interactions.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Janette Swartzberg.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
Kirtan Patel’s sentence of 10 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime term of supervised release, serves as a reminder of the severity of the charges and the consequences of such actions. The case highlights the importance of protecting our children from online predators and the need for increased awareness and education on this critical issue.
