Knife-Wielding Man Sentenced to 24 Months
A Cherry Creek man has been sentenced to 24 months in custody for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, according to the U.S. Attorney for South Dakota. William Z. Mexican, 21, was found guilty of the crime and received a 24-month sentence, 2 years of Supervised Release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The incident occurred on August 20, 2013, in Cherry Creek, when Mexican got into an altercation with two other individuals. During the altercation, Mexican pulled a hunting knife and attempted to stab one of the victims with the intent to do bodily harm.
The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case. Mexican was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after being sentenced.
The indictment was made by a federal grand jury on October 22, 2013, and Mexican pled guilty to the charges on December 12, 2013. U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange presided over the case and handed down the sentence.
The U.S. Attorney for South Dakota, Brendan V. Johnson, announced the sentencing, stating that Mexican’s actions were violent and unacceptable. The sentence is a reminder that violence will not be tolerated in our communities.
