ST. LOUIS – In a stunning turn of events, Marshall Lampkin, 35, from St. Louis, has been convicted of masterminding a $200,000 online shopping fraud using Kohl’s Cash. The jury in U.S. District Court in St. Louis found Lampkin guilty on all charges, bringing an end to a sophisticated scheme that spanned two years.
According to evidence and testimony presented during the trial, Lampkin engaged in a deceitful double-dipping scam involving Kohl’s Cash. He would spend thousands of dollars’ worth of Kohl’s Cash at physical stores, purchasing high-value items like flooring and furniture. Immediately following these purchases, he would use the same Kohl’s Cash to order even more merchandise online, capitalizing on the lag in transaction processing. Lampkin then returned the in-store purchases for cash or Kohl’s Cash, enabling him to repeat the cycle.
The scam operated over 100 times across 40 different stores in 13 states between 2021 and 2022. Lampkin had his fraudulent online orders shipped to storage units in St. Louis and a relative’s house in Illinois, where he later attempted to sell the stolen goods through Facebook advertisements.
Investigators uncovered a trove of Kohl’s merchandise at Lampkin’s storage facilities, valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. The trial began on Monday, culminating in a conviction for five counts of mail fraud in less than seven minutes. Lampkin is now scheduled to be sentenced in December.
The U.S. Secret Service and the St. Louis County Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justin Ladendorf and Derek Wiseman are handling the prosecution of this case.
