Resident’s Opioid Prescription Scam Exposed
In a shocking case of medical malfeasance, Kyle Betts, a former medical resident at a St. Louis medical school, has pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining prescription opioid pain medications.
According to court documents, between November 2014 and February 2016, Betts wrote over seventy false prescriptions for Percocet® and Norco®, using the names of six separate individuals, including those of his family members and romantic partners. He even went so far as to personally present these prescriptions to pharmacies, deceiving pharmacists and medical officials alike.
The Medicare and Illinois Medicaid programs funded some of the drugs obtained under these false prescriptions, further highlighting the egregious nature of Betts’ actions.
Betts’ guilty plea came before United States District Judge Catherine Perry, who set sentencing for August 17, 2017. The charge carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000, with the Judge required to consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines in determining the actual sentence.
The investigation into Betts’ activities was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, with assistance from the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
