Todd Martin Kreykes, Pandemic Fund Theft, Michigan 2024

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Mark Totten, has announced that Todd Martin Kreykes, 60, from Kalkaska County, is facing felony charges for theft of government property. Kreykes is accused of misusing COVID-19 pandemic funds allocated for patient care at Boardman Family Practice for his own personal gain.

“Every dollar that Todd Kreykes spent on luxury goods and vacations was one less dollar to help businesses struggling during the pandemic,” U.S. Attorney Mark Totten commented. “This conviction can’t make up for that lost assistance, but it will show that criminals who defraud the government will be held accountable.”

The defendant faces a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Kreykes has agreed to plea guilty and, as part of his plea agreement, will make full restitution prior to sentencing.

According to the felony information, Boardman Family Practice received over $294,000 from various federal programs designed to assist medical providers during the pandemic. Instead of using these funds for patient care, Kreykes is alleged to have stolen over $200,000 and used it for a new truck, Harley-Davidson motorcycle, remodeling his home, paying off personal loans, and taking vacations.

Mario M. Pinto, Special Agent in Charge with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), emphasized the importance of protecting federal programs: “Providers who misappropriated these funds showed disregard for taxpayers and those relying on these vital programs.”

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Health and Human Service Office of Inspector General and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Stella prosecuting the case. The charges in a felony information are merely accusations, and Kreykes is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
