Carlos Fernandez-Barritos, Illegal Reentry, Connecticut 2024

HARTFORD, CT – In a stunning reversal of fortune for CARLOS FERNANDEZ-BARRITOS, 30, a citizen of Mexico with a violent streak, he was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison today after being caught reentering the U.S. illegally.

United States Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery announced that the Hartford resident had already served 14 months for his role in a notorious narcotics trafficking ring before being deported to Mexico in 2015. However, Fernandez’s criminal exploits did not end there. On November 4, 2022, he was charged with disorderly conduct, threatening, assault in the third degree, reckless endangerment, and interfering with police.

But it was a March 15, 2023 incident that would land him back in American custody. The East Hartford Police Department responded to a report of Fernandez stabbing his domestic partner. He managed to flee before officers arrived on the scene. Since August 15, 2023, he has been detained.

Facing federal charges for illegal reentry, Fernandez pleaded guilty on May 3, 2024. His latest conviction brings a total of three strikes against him. The investigation into his illegal activities was handled by U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie T. Levick prosecuted the case.

U.S. District Judge Vernon D. Oliver issued the sentence, ensuring that Fernandez’s unlawful return to the United States will be met with severe consequences. His illegal reentry into the country is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating immigration-related crimes.
