A shocking case of gun violence has unfolded in Stow, Ohio, where a 32-year-old woman has been charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person following a straw purchase of a Glock 9 mm pistol in March from a store in North Canton.
Kristen Vilk, 32, was arrested on suspicion of making a straw purchase of the firearm, which has sparked an ongoing investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
According to court documents, Vilk overdosed on April 17 and was administered two doses of Narcan, leading authorities to believe that she was addicted to drugs at the time of the purchase.
The investigation is still in its early stages, but the ATF has confirmed that Vilk’s relatives made statements indicating her addiction to drugs, further supporting the allegations.
As the case continues, prosecutors will review factors such as Vilk’s prior criminal record, her role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation to determine the sentence. If convicted, Vilk’s sentence will be determined by the Court, with the maximum sentence not exceeding the statutory maximum.
The matter is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Teresa Riley following the ATF’s investigation.
