Three Arrested in Vermont on Charges of Conspiracy to Distribute Heroin

A trio of suspects has been taken into custody in connection with a heroin conspiracy case in Vermont. Kron Lewis, 27, of Trinidad and Tobago, Joseph Lupien, 33, of Barre, VT, and Matthew Bennett, 20, of Barre, VT, are facing federal charges stemming from a February 18, 2015, traffic stop on I-89 in Sharon, VT.

According to court documents, a Vermont State Police trooper conducting the traffic stop discovered approximately 3050 individual bags of heroin and 16.9 grams of bulk heroin in a bag in the trunk of the vehicle. Bennett and Lupien claimed that the heroin belonged to Lewis, who they said had just picked them up at a bus stop in White River Junction. The pair alleged that they had given Lewis a ride from the bus station several times and were paid in heroin and/or cash for their assistance.

Lewis, Lupien, and Bennett made initial appearances in United States District Court in Burlington on February 23, 2015. U.S. Magistrate Judge John M. Conroy detained Lewis pending trial. Lupien is scheduled for a detention hearing on February 23, 2015, while Bennett was released on conditions.

The charge against Lewis, Lupien, and Bennett is merely an accusation, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, they face up to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $1,000,000.

The defendants are represented by various attorneys: David Watts, Esq., for Lewis; Michael Desautels, Esq., for Lupien; and Elizabeth Mann, Esq., for Bennett. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wendy G. Fuller is prosecuting the case.

The case is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against the heroin epidemic in Vermont. As the state continues to grapple with the issue, law enforcement agencies and prosecutors are working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
