Krueger Warns of COVID-19 Schemes, Wisconsin 2020
In a disturbing trend, U.S. Attorney Matthew D. Krueger of the Eastern District of Wisconsin is warning the public about COVID-19 fraud schemes that are taking advantage of the national emergency.
According to Krueger, individuals and businesses are selling fake cures for COVID-19 online and engaging in other forms of fraud. Additionally, phishing emails from entities posing as the World Health Organization or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are being sent to unsuspecting victims.
Malicious websites and apps that appear to share Coronavirus-related information are also being used to gain access to devices until payment is received. Furthermore, medical providers are obtaining patient information for COVID-19 testing and then using that information to fraudulently bill for other tests and procedures.
The National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF) hotline (1-866-720-5721) and e-mail address (disaster@leo.gov) are available for the public to report suspected fraud schemes related to COVID-19.
In coordination with Attorney General William Barr, U.S. Attorneys have been directed to prioritize the investigation and prosecution of Coronavirus fraud schemes. Krueger emphasized that anyone trying to exploit this national emergency for private gain should know that they will be pursued.
“Anyone trying to exploit this national emergency for private gain should know that they will be pursued. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is open and focused on keeping our communities safe from fraudsters. Watch out for websites selling fake COVID-19 products, using fake emails, text messages, or social media posts as a ruse to get your money or your personal information,” said Krueger.
The NCDF coordinates complaints with 16 additional federal law enforcement agencies, as well as state Attorneys General and local authorities. To find more about Department of Justice resources and information, please visit www.justice.gov/coronavirus.
