A 43-year-old Kansas man, Michael Steven Podrybau, has pleaded guilty to distributing obscene AI-generated images depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The crime occurred in Alton, Kansas, between March 2023 and April 2023, where Podrybau used the online platform Wickr Pro to share the images. The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Podrybau’s guilty plea is a result of a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.
Podrybau is scheduled to be sentenced on November 17, 2026. A federal district court judge will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Walton is prosecuting the case.
The use of AI-generated images in child pornography cases is a growing concern, as it allows perpetrators to create and distribute explicit content without directly involving real victims. However, the production and distribution of such content are still considered serious crimes and are punishable by law.
