John Hicks, a 39-year-old Wichita man, was busted with a stash of methamphetamine and illegal firearms in January 2025. The Wichita Police Department was tracking Hicks due to a felony arrest warrant for aggravated assault. When officers caught up with him, they found a baggie containing approximately 14 grams of pure meth, drug paraphernalia, and ammunition on his person. A search of his vehicle turned up two firearms, including one with an extended 30-round magazine.
Hicks admitted to consuming some of the meth before his arrest. The combination of drugs and guns is a volatile mix that puts innocent lives at risk. As U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser noted, ‘Armed drug dealers put innocent people living in the community at greater risk of falling victim to gun violence.’
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Wichita Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ola Odeyemi prosecuted the case, which resulted in Hicks’ guilty plea to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Hicks’ sentence of 84 months in prison reflects the seriousness of his crimes. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and gun violence in Wichita and beyond.
