Russell Scott IV, a 38-year-old from Gulf Shores, Alabama, was caught with approximately 3,000 fentanyl-laced pills and nine firearms in his vehicle during a traffic stop on Interstate 35 in Wichita, Kansas, in September 2023. Scott, who pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, was sentenced to 72 months in prison. The traffic stop was initiated by a Wichita police detective who witnessed Scott speeding. A probable cause search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the fentanyl pills and firearms.
The US Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ola Odeyemi handling the prosecution. The Wichita Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) investigated the case. According to US Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser, the defendant admitted his intention to distribute the fentanyl pills before his arrest.
The sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime, as fentanyl continues to pose a significant risk to public health. Although deaths caused by fentanyl overdoses are down from record highs, the substance remains a deadly threat. The successful prosecution of this case is a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and keep communities safe.
