Jose Nunez, Methamphetamine Trafficking, California 2024

Los Angeles County’s feared drug kingpin, Jose Nunez, 43 of Lancaster, was today sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston to serve 21 years and 10 months behind bars for his role in a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation.

The court documents revealed that Nunez worked under a Mexico-based drug ring, importing large quantities of meth, cocaine, and fentanyl into the United States. His duties included operating a stash house, distributing drugs, and setting up a lab to convert liquid meth to crystal form.

In June 2024, Operation “Toxic Waste” dismantled Nunez’s drug empire, leading to his arrest along with 14 others. The operation resulted in the seizure of over 12,900 pounds of meth, over 50 pounds of fentanyl mixture, and other drugs.

During sentencing, Nunez was held accountable for distributing 3,500 pounds of meth, as evidenced by tens of thousands of intercepted communications. His organization had been smuggling drugs through portable projectors, batteries, and concealed in transport vehicles.

The investigation and operation were a collaborative effort between multiple federal agencies, including the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and others. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justin J. Gilio and Cody S. Chapple are leading the prosecution.

This case is part of Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (S.O.S.), a Justice Department initiative aimed at reducing the supply of synthetic opioids in high-impact areas. Nunez’s sentence sends a stark message to drug traffickers across the nation.
