BUFFALO, N.Y. – Maxwell H. Gawley, 34, of Lackawanna, New York, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 60 months for the distribution of child pornography. U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr. handed down the sentence today, bringing a grim end to a case that exposed a calculated predator exploiting vulnerable victims online.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Michael DiGiacomo, detailed a disturbing pattern of behavior. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Evan K. Glaberson, Gawley engaged in sexually explicit conversations with a 14-year-old male victim via Snapchat in August 2022. The conversations quickly turned predatory, with Gawley soliciting images from the minor and openly discussing potential sexual contact. The victim, tragically, complied with these requests.
Gawley’s depravity didn’t stop there. He brazenly told the minor he “might even have to make a road trip… [come] see you if we were dating,” a chilling statement revealing his intent to further exploit the situation. Just a month later, in September 2022, Gawley expanded his criminal activity, sharing images and videos of child pornography with another individual over Snapchat, demonstrating a clear pattern of distributing and consuming this horrific content.
This wasn’t a crime committed in the shadows. Gawley actively sought out and engaged with victims through a popular social media platform, leveraging technology to facilitate his abuse. The investigation, a coordinated effort between Homeland Security Investigations (Special Agent-in-Charge Erin Keegan), the New York State Police (Major Amie Feroleto), and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, meticulously pieced together the evidence needed to secure this conviction.
“This sentencing sends a clear message: those who exploit children online will be relentlessly pursued and held accountable,” stated a source within Homeland Security Investigations, speaking on background. “The digital realm offers anonymity, but it does not offer immunity. We are committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society.”
Gawley’s 60-month sentence is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child pornography and online exploitation. While prison won’t undo the harm he’s caused, it removes a dangerous predator from the streets and hopefully prevents further victimization. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on efforts to combat online child exploitation. # # # #
