Lamont Thomas, Meth and Heroin Trafficking, West Virginia 2021

Lamont Thomas, a 42-year-old man from Detroit, Michigan, pled guilty to a serious crime in West Virginia.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, Lamont Thomas was found to be in possession of eight pounds of methamphetamine and approximately 61 grams of suspected heroin.

The crime occurred on May 14, 2020, when Thomas traveled from Detroit to Charleston by Greyhound bus. He was stopped by officers of the Charleston Police Department after leaving the Greyhound Bus Station.

A drug K-9 alerted on Thomas’s backpack, leading officers to search it and find the large quantity of methamphetamine and heroin. Thomas admitted that the drugs were his and that he intended to distribute the controlled substances.

U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart praised the work of the Charleston Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for catching Thomas soon after he arrived in Charleston.

Thomas faces a minimum of five years and up to 40 years in federal prison when sentenced on May 17, 2021.

The investigation was conducted by the Charleston Police Department and the DEA, with Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr., presiding over the hearing. Assistant United States Attorney Monica Coleman is handling the prosecution.
