Darrin Lamore, 49, of Enfield, has been sentenced to five months of imprisonment for stealing government funds. This comes after an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Enfield Police Department found that Lamore, the former executive director of the Enfield Community Development Corporation (ECDC), had been misusing federal grant money.
According to court documents, Lamore had been using the grants to fund his own salary, well in excess of the allowed amount. He also falsified invoices from vendors and submitted them to the state for reimbursement, even though he had never paid the invoices. Through this scheme, Lamore took $97,854.34 in government funds.
Lamore pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and theft from a program receiving federal funds on March 16, 2018. He was arrested on a criminal complaint on February 16, 2018. As part of his sentence, Lamore will also serve three years of supervised release, with the first five months in home confinement with electronic monitoring.
The ECDC, which oversees economic development projects in Enfield, had been allocated federal grant money to provide assistance to low and middle income home buyers, small business assistance, and the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties. Instead, Lamore used these funds for his own personal gain. U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson ordered Lamore to pay full restitution to the Town of Enfield and the State Department of Economic and Community Development.
The investigation into Lamore’s activities was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Enfield Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David E. Novick. John H. Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced the sentencing.
Lamore, who is currently released on a $25,000 bond, is required to report to prison on January 5, 2021. The sentencing of Lamore serves as a reminder that those who misuse government funds will be held accountable for their actions. The case against Lamore is a prime example of the importance of oversight and accountability in the use of federal grant money.
