As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to ravage the nation, a disturbing trend has emerged in Iowa: unscrupulous landlords are exploiting desperate tenants by demanding sex acts in exchange for rent payments. This despicable conduct is not only morally reprehensible, but it’s also illegal.
According to Peter E. Deegan, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa, his office will be using every available tool to combat this epidemic of sexual harassment in housing. “My office will work with all available partners, including state, local, and tribal officials, to address sexual harassment in housing, especially during this national crisis,” Deegan said.
The pandemic has left many Iowans without jobs or wages, making it difficult for them to make rent payments. However, instead of showing empathy and understanding, some landlords have seen this as an opportunity to exploit their tenants. These landlords are reportedly demanding sex acts or inappropriate sexual favors in exchange for rent payments, which is a clear violation of the law.
Deegan emphasized that his office will not tolerate this behavior and will use every means at its disposal to investigate, prosecute, and hold responsible anyone who engages in such conduct. “Combatting sexual harassment associated with housing has been a priority for years and it remains a priority during this unique time in history. Such conduct cannot be tolerated,” he said.
Victims of sexual harassment in housing are encouraged to report instances of wrongdoing to the authorities. They can call the Sexual Harassment in Housing Initiative at 1-844-380-6178 or email
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is urging anyone with knowledge of such instances to come forward and report them to the authorities. By working together, we can ensure that those who exploit and harass vulnerable members of our community are held accountable for their actions.
As the nation continues to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, it’s essential that we prioritize the protection of our most vulnerable citizens. The exploitation of desperate tenants by unscrupulous landlords is a clear indication of the need for increased awareness and action.
