Adan Melendez, Crack Trafficking, TX 2015

LAREDO, Texas – The streets of South Laredo are a little less poisoned today. Adan Melendez, the alleged head of the Melendez Drug Trafficking Organization, will spend the rest of his life in federal prison, Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez announced. The sentence comes after a jury found Melendez guilty in June 2015 on a staggering 20 counts, a testament to the depth and brazenness of his operation.

Melendez, 40, also known as “12,” wasn’t just slinging dope. The charges painted a picture of a ruthless operator: drug conspiracy, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, crack, and marijuana, the exploitation of minors in his drug network, money laundering, maintaining a drug haven, and even possession of a firearm connected to his criminal enterprise. The evidence showed a man who saw people as disposable, and profit as the only goal.

U.S. District Judge Diana Saldaña didn’t mince words when handing down the life sentence. She found “no redeeming value” in Melendez’s background or lifestyle, a damning indictment of a man who built an empire on misery. But Melendez wasn’t working alone. His sons, Adan Melendez Jr., aka “Vivi,” 22, and Andres Melendez, aka “Chon,” 21, both of Laredo, also faced the music today. Vivi received 147 months for the drug conspiracy, while Chon will spend 188 months behind bars for conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

The Melendez organization flooded South Laredo with cocaine, crack, and marijuana from at least 2012 until their takedown in the summer of 2014. Testimony revealed the sheer scale of their greed: a cool $1,200 per day in profits, funneled into luxury cars for themselves. This wasn’t about need; it was about flaunting wealth built on the broken lives of others. So far, 18 defendants have been sentenced as part of “Operation Revocation,” with terms stretching up to 210 months. Ten more still await sentencing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney José Angel Moreno delivered a particularly chilling summation, drawing a parallel between drug dealers and the mythical vampire. He quoted a Fifth Circuit case, stating: “The foul hand of the drug dealer blights life after life and, like the vampire of fable, creates others in its owner’s own image – others who create others still, across our land and down our generations, sparing not even the unborn.” It’s a stark, brutal truth often lost in the statistics.

The takedown was a joint effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Laredo Police Department, Webb County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas Department of Public Safety, working under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. AUSAs Moreno and Jorge Vela are prosecuting the case. While this sentencing marks a significant blow to the Melendez organization, the fight against the drug trade is far from over. The Grimy Times will continue to expose the rot that festers beneath the surface.
