Hammond’s Angela Young, 45, has been handed a 51-month sentence for her role in a brazen identity theft and HIPAA violation scheme. The Lynwood resident was sentenced by District Court Judge Joseph S. Van Bokkelen after being convicted of conspiracy to commit identity fraud, two counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of knowingly disclosing HIPPA information, and one count of unlawful use of social security numbers.
Young’s criminal activities, which spanned from June 2007 until October 2009, were carried out while she was employed at a medical facility in Illinois. With access to sensitive patient data, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and health insurance details, Young exploited her position to steal personal information from various patients without their consent or knowledge.
According to court documents, this information was then funneled to a co-defendant who used it to open fraudulent credit card accounts in the victims’ names. The damage caused by Young’s actions is estimated at $64,791.74 in restitution, and she has been ordered to pay this sum.
Young’s sentence also includes two years of supervised release following her prison term. The investigation into this case was led by the United States Postal Inspection Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Toi Houston handling the prosecution.
This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who abuse their positions to commit fraud and violate privacy laws.
