Gnoan Pierre Kablan, Tax Evasion, New York 2016

A 52-year-old man from Latham, New York, has admitted to filing false tax returns, a crime that could land him up to three years behind bars.

Gnoan Pierre Kablan, of Latham, pleaded guilty to aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns, a charge that was announced by United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Shantelle P. Kitchen, Special Agent in Charge of IRS-Criminal Investigation’s New York Field Office.

According to the investigation, Kablan prepared 16 tax returns that contained false information, including deductions for charitable gifts, unreimbursed employee expenses, and solar property and energy efficiency credits. These false deductions and credits resulted in refunds for his clients that they were not entitled to.

Kablan faces a maximum fine of $100,000, a maximum term of supervised release of one year, and restitution to the government in the amount of the tax loss that his conduct is found to have caused.

The case was investigated by the New York Field Office of the IRS-Criminal Investigation, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett.

Kablan is scheduled to be sentenced on May 23, 2016, by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino.

The maximum sentence for federal crimes is typically less than the maximum penalties, and actual sentences are imposed by a judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
