United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced the sentencing of Lidia Irena Kula, 34, a resident of Lincoln, Nebraska. On May 14, 2024, Kula was sentenced to 132 months’ imprisonment for distribution of heroin by Senior United State District Judge John M. Gerrard. The federal system offers no parole, and upon her release from prison, she will be subject to a mandatory 3-year term of supervised release.
The case came to light on December 27, 2021, when Lincoln Police officers and firefighters responded to reports of an unconscious individual at the intersection of northwest 12th St. and West Cornhusker in Lincoln. One witness, who had administered CPR, informed police that he had seen the victim fall down. The officers’ immediate response saved the man’s life. During their search, they found a vile of suspected heroin, three syringes, and a spoon with heroin residue on it.
Investigations revealed that Kula met the victim at Casey’s convenience store in Lincoln, where she exchanged $70 for heroin. The victim later overdosed after ingesting the drug. Video footage from the store showed him entering the bathroom after purchasing the drugs. He was found unresponsive outside the store just a few minutes later.
After further investigation, it was discovered that Kula had been messaging the victim on Facebook about how to avoid future overdoses. During these exchanges, she gave dangerous advice, such as ‘do half at a time.’ An undercover officer eventually purchased .5 grams of heroin from Kula for $150 from a Walgreen’s parking lot in Lincoln, confirming the substance involved in the overdose.
The Lincoln Police Department took the lead in investigating this case. The department has been tireless in its efforts to combat drug trafficking and keep the community safe.
This is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by heroin distribution and the importance of law enforcement’s dedication to public safety.
