Lincoln Family Wellness Office Manager Sentenced for Wire Fraud
A former office manager at a Lincoln, Nebraska, wellness center was sentenced to prison for her role in a scheme to defraud the business of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Valerie M. Stevens, 36, was sentenced to 15 months in prison by U.S. Senior District Judge Richard G. Kopf on Tuesday in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was also ordered to pay $222,322.43 in restitution and serve three years on supervised release.
The scheme, which spanned from January 2011 to October 2016, involved Stevens using a Pinnacle Bank Visa card issued to Lincoln Family Wellness, P.C. for personal expenses. The card was billed to the business at their Lincoln address, but Stevens knew she was not authorized to use it for personal items.
According to court records, Stevens made numerous unauthorized charges on the card, totaling more than $130,000, for personal expenses for herself and others. She would then pay for these charges using the proceeds of Lincoln Family Wellness, P.C.
The scheme was uncovered after the business began to notice discrepancies in their financial records. An investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation later revealed the extent of Stevens’ scheme.
Stevens’ sentence is a reminder that those who engage in white-collar crime will be held accountable for their actions. The case serves as a warning to businesses and individuals to be vigilant in monitoring their financial records and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
The case is a significant victory for the community, and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the investigators who brought it to light.
