Local Woman Guilty of Identity Theft
HAMMOND – Alexis T. Young, 33, of Hammond, Indiana has been found guilty of 3 counts of aggravated identity theft.
According to documents in the case, in addition to being found guilty at trial to the above charges, on April 10, 2015 Young pleaded guilty to count 1 of the indictment alleging conspiracy to commit identity theft.
In the conspiracy charge, it was alleged that she along with other defendants used personally identifiable information such as names, dates of birth and social security numbers of victims without their knowledge to obtain merchandise through fraudulently acquired credit cards.
Assistant United States Attorneys Gary T. Bell and Toi D. Houston prosecuted the case, which is a result of an investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service.
Young’s co-defendant was an employee of a medical facility, who disclosed the individually identifiable health information of victims to defendant Alexis Young and others.
The jury delivered their verdict after a four-day trial, finding Young guilty of the charges against her.
The case highlights the importance of protecting individuals’ personally identifiable information and the consequences of identity theft.
As the investigation continues, the community can rest assured that those responsible for identity theft will be held accountable.
The sentencing for Young has not yet been scheduled, but it is expected to be determined in the coming weeks.
