Lockerbie Bombers Still at Large
Twenty-five years after the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which claimed the lives of 259 people on the plane and 11 on the ground, the families and friends of the victims are still seeking justice.
At a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the bombing, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin spoke of the importance of learning from the tragedy and applying those lessons to prevent future attacks.
Carlin, who attended the ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, recalled the devastating impact of the bombing on the families of those who were lost, many of whom were American college students flying home for the holidays.
‘I grew up in New York City, a place where you can experience the anonymity now enjoyed by so many on the Internet,’ Carlin said. ‘And when I was a kid, the NYPD sent an officer to our school who told us how to conduct ourselves on the streets of New York.’
Carlin’s remarks highlighted the need for increased security measures and international cooperation to prevent future terrorist attacks, including cyber attacks.
‘We can work together to change norms now — not in the wake of an immensely damaging terrorist cyber attack,’ Carlin said. ‘In doing so, we will have a much better chance of preventing such an attack from ever taking place.’
The Lockerbie bombing led to a major overhaul of aviation security, with many of the same security measures called for in the wake of the attack being implemented after the 9/11 Commission’s report.
As the world marks the 25th anniversary of the Lockerbie bombing, the families of the victims continue to seek justice and remind us of the importance of learning from the past to prevent future tragedies.
Carlin’s remarks were a powerful reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism and the need for continued vigilance and cooperation to prevent future attacks.
