A brazen scheme to line their pockets at the Port of Savannah has landed two men behind bars. Philip Smith, 41, of Richmond Hill, and Antonio Evans, 41, of Sylvania, Georgia, were sentenced to prison for their roles in a fake transportation invoice scam.
From July 2021 to August 2024, Smith, a former logistics company employee, created fake freight-hauling jobs and assigned them to Evans, a trucking company owner. The logistics company paid Evans for work that didn’t exist, and Evans kicked back a portion of the funds to Smith.
The scheme netted $821,899, which the duo will now be forced to pay back in restitution. Smith got 27 months in prison, while Evans will serve 13 months. Both men pleaded guilty to Wire Fraud.
US Attorney Margaret E. ‘Meg’ Heap said the Port of Savannah deserves honesty and integrity from its employees and service providers. Smith and Evans were caught betraying that trust and are now paying the price.
