TYLER, Texas – The Department of Justice has handed down a severe penalty for drug kingpin Spencer Garod Elam. The 39-year-old Longview native was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison today, a sentence that marks the culmination of a years-long investigation into his criminal enterprise.
Elam was convicted by a jury on October 3, 2012, for conspiracy to possess hydrocodone with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and using a communications facility to aid in a felony. U.S. District Judge Leonard E. Davis delivered the stern sentence in the Eastern District of Texas.
Elam’s downfall began on May 16, 2011, when he was nabbed after an extensive investigation into drug trafficking operations in Gregg County. A federal grand jury indicted him along with 12 other Longview residents for various drug and gun-related offenses just a week prior.
This case has been a collaborative effort between several law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Gregg County C.O.D.E. Unit, Gregg County Sheriff’s Office, and the Longview Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard L. Moore handled the prosecution.
Elam’s conviction sends a clear message about the justice system’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking operations and keeping communities safe. The sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who engage in illegal drug trade and firearms violations.
U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced the sentencing, emphasizing the Department of Justice’s dedication to fighting crime and ensuring public safety.
