Louis Clayton Chaffin, Assault with a Bat and Firearm, Oklahoma 2017

A broken Arrow home was turned into a scene of chaos on December 9, 2017, when Louis Clayton Chaffin, a 45-year-old Tahlequah man, broke in wielding a bat and gun, assaulting a woman and man. The defendant pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary in Indian Country and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country.

Chaffin admitted that he kicked in the front door and carried an aluminum baseball bat and a 9mm pistol. He struck the man and woman with the bat repeatedly, and pointed the gun at the man, pistol whipping him in the face. The incident only ended after another individual, the homeowner, took out his own gun and ordered Chaffin to leave.

As a result of the assault, the male victim suffered broken facial bones and a fractured skull. The female victim suffered a concussion from the beating, and her face later required numerous stitches.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Broken Arrow Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael F. Harder and Eric O. Johnston prosecuted the case.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell sentenced Chaffin to 84 months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release. The sentence should serve as a warning to violent perpetrators that this office and our law enforcement partners will hold them accountable, said U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.

Chaffin’s sentence is a result of his guilty plea. He admitted to committing the crimes and accepted responsibility for his actions. The sentence reflects the severity of the crimes committed and the harm caused to the victims.

The case is a reminder of the importance of law enforcement and the need for the community to work together to prevent violent crimes. The sentence should serve as a deterrent to others who may consider committing similar crimes.
