Phillip Gene Laird, a 42-year-old man from Sand Springs, Oklahoma, has pleaded guilty to assaulting and strangling his intimate partner in Indian Country. Laird, a tribal member of the Choctaw Nation, faces a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
According to the plea agreement, Laird admitted that he was intoxicated and arguing with his victim when he pinned her to the ground and strangled her. Laird will remain in custody pending sentencing, which will be scheduled at a later date.
The FBI and Sand Springs Police Department conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Chantelle Dial, Michael Harder, and Melissa Weems are prosecuting the case. U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson announced the guilty plea.
Laird’s actions demonstrate a clear disregard for the safety and well-being of his partner, and his guilty plea is a necessary step towards holding him accountable for his crimes. The FBI and local law enforcement agencies must be commended for their efforts in investigating and prosecuting this case.
As a community, we must work together to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. This includes providing support and resources to those affected by domestic violence and promoting education and awareness about the signs and consequences of such abuse.
