Indictment Unsealed in Louisiana Resident Card Case
MOISES CHICAJ-IMUL, a 26-year-old Guatemalan citizen, has been charged with two federal crimes, announced U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente. The indictment alleges that Chicaj-imul knowingly possessed, used, and attempted to use a counterfeit Permanent Resident Card, which was prescribed by law as evidence of authorized stay and employment in the United States.
According to the indictment, on August 12, 2008, Chicaj-imul falsely represented that a Social Security number had been assigned to him by the Commissioner of Social Security. This was done with the intent to deceive for the purpose of completing an Employment Eligibility Verification Form.
U.S. Attorney Boente reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Chicaj-imul faces a maximum term of imprisonment of fifteen years, a fine of $500,000, and three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment if convicted of both counts.
The case was investigated by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations (ICE). The prosecution is being handled by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.
The indictment is a result of an ongoing effort to combat immigration-related crimes in the United States. U.S. Attorney Boente emphasized the importance of upholding the law and protecting the integrity of the immigration system.
