LOUISVILLE, KY — A grim indictment has been issued against a Louisville couple accused of violating federal firearms laws, according to the United States Department of Justice.
The charges stem from an investigation by the ATF and the Louisville Metro Police Department. The grand jury accused George Verner, 28, and Monique Pruitt Verner, also 28, of committing serious firearms offenses over a two-month period in 2022.
George Verner, a convicted felon, is alleged to have possessed a Taurus Model G2C 9-millimeter pistol between April 12, 2022, and June 17, 2022. His previous criminal record includes convictions for possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen firearms, illegal possession of marijuana with a firearm, robbery in the first degree, and tampering with physical evidence.
Monique Pruitt Verner is accused of transferring a firearm to George Verner, knowing he had been previously convicted of a felony. Both defendants now face significant prison sentences if convicted: George for up to 10 years, Monique for up to 20 years. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Dahl. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence in the community.
Despite the allegations, all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
