LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a gritty victory for justice, Jescell Whittle was today sentenced to 37 years in federal prison for his participation in a brutal series of armed robberies in Metro Louisville. The sentence marks a major success for Project Recoil, a collaborative effort between federal and local law enforcement agencies.
Whittle, a convicted felon, faced charges of obstruction of interstate commerce through robbery and using a firearm during the heists. His six-day trial concluded on August 30, 2016, with his conviction for attempting to rob the Cricket Wireless store at 3125 W. Broadway and aiding in the robbery of the Speedway on Taylor Boulevard, where he discharged a firearm.
The sentence follows the convictions of three other co-defendants: James Gore Jr., sentenced to 72 months for aiding and abetting; Tony Trumbo Jr., given 255 months for his role; and Dahntel Newsome, who pleaded guilty and received a 243-month sentence. All were sentenced in 2015.
Whittle’s attempted robbery of the Cricket Wireless store was thwarted by surveillance footage that showed him brandishing a firearm and attempting to vault over the counter. His involvement in the Speedway heist resulted in serious injury to a customer after Whittle discharged his weapon during the crime.
United States Attorney John E. Kuhn Jr. praised the Project Recoil initiative, stating, ‘This sentence is an example of how our partnership is working to identify and successfully prosecute the most dangerous offenders.’ The on-going collaboration has aimed to reduce violent crime in the community by maximizing penalties for the most violent offenders.
This sentencing sends a clear message that armed robbery will not be tolerated in Louisville, a testament to the dedication of law enforcement involved in Project Recoil. Whittle’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in violence and crime.
