Jose Adan De Dios-lara, a 25-year-old citizen of Honduras, has been sentenced to 5 months imprisonment for illegal reentry into the United States. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier in federal court.
According to court documents, De Dios-lara pled guilty to a one-count indictment admitting he was an alien who was previously removed and was knowingly and unlawfully found in the United States in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana on November 14, 2012, without the Attorney General or Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security having expressly consented to his re-application for admission into the United States.
De Dios-lara’s sentence was subject to enhancement based on a previous felony conviction. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Barbier ordered that De Dios-lara be placed on two years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of supervised release.
The case was investigated by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations with the assistance of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.
De Dios-lara’s illegal reentry into the United States is a serious offense, and his sentence reflects the gravity of his actions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to protect our communities from individuals who seek to bypass our immigration laws.
The investigation and prosecution of this case serve as a reminder that immigration laws are in place to ensure public safety and national security. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to identify and prosecute individuals who attempt to circumvent our immigration laws.
De Dios-lara’s sentence is a significant blow to those who would seek to exploit our immigration system. We hope that this case will serve as a deterrent to others who would consider similar actions.
