Lugo Gets 10 Years for 23lb Cocaine Smuggle
BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A brazen attempt to flood American streets with cocaine ended with a hefty federal prison sentence. Gilberto Lugo, 36, a U.S. citizen residing in Matamoros, Mexico, was sentenced to 120 months in prison today for possession with intent to distribute cocaine, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
Lugo pleaded guilty on February 15, 2023, to the charge stemming from a July 21, 2022, bust at the Veterans Port of Entry (POE) in Brownsville. Customs and Border Protection officers flagged Lugo as a nervous wreck – avoiding eye contact and traveling alone in a vehicle he owned. His story about seeking a “welding course” in the United States didn’t hold water. A search quickly revealed the truth: 10.46 kilograms (23 pounds) of cocaine expertly hidden behind the door panels.
U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera didn’t buy Lugo’s flimsy excuse and handed down the maximum sentence, citing a prior felony conviction for assault on a family household member. The judge made it clear that Lugo’s history of violence factored heavily into the decision. Beyond the immediate cocaine seizure, investigators discovered a pattern of border crossings stretching back to January 2022, suggesting Lugo was a seasoned courier.
The investigation dug deeper, revealing Lugo had purchased the vehicle in December 2021. A forensic examination of his cellphone painted a clear picture of his criminal enterprise. Photos showed various vehicles crossing the POE, stacks of cash, and telltale zip-lock baggies containing a white powder consistent with cocaine. This wasn’t a one-time mistake; Lugo was running a full-blown smuggling operation.
Lugo will remain in federal custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. The sentence also includes five years of supervised release following his incarceration. Homeland Security Investigations led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Oscar Ponce skillfully prosecuting the case. This conviction sends a clear message: attempting to profit from the misery of drug addiction will be met with the full force of federal law.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on other instances of brazen criminal activity along the US-Mexico border. The flow of narcotics into the United States remains a significant threat to public safety, and we remain committed to exposing the individuals and organizations responsible.
