Luis Garcia-Torres, a 44-year-old Mexican national, has landed himself 28 months in the slammer for reentering the United States illegally.
According to sources, Garcia-Torres was driving a car that was pulled over during a traffic stop on April 29, 2014. The traffic stop led to the discovery that his identification belonged to another individual.
Garcia-Torres admitted to not being a U.S. citizen and returning to the United States multiple times illegally. His troubles with the law date back to 1990 when he was deported after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter in North Carolina.
He also had a previous stint in prison, serving a 10-year sentence for aggravated battery from 2001 to 2011. Despite his multiple run-ins with the law, Garcia-Torres continued to disregard the law and reenter the United States illegally.
Luis Garcia-Torres’ case was investigated by United States Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Louisiana State Police, and the Morgan City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Howard C. Parker prosecuted the case.
The 44-year-old’s guilty plea was made on September 4, 2014, and was later sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard T. Haik. Garcia-Torres will be serving his 28-month sentence for one count of aggravated reentry of a removed alien.
As the nation grapples with immigration issues, cases like Garcia-Torres serve as a reminder of the importance of enforcing immigration laws and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
Grimy Times will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
