Luke Newton Mowrer, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, South Dakota 2019

A shocking case of violence has come to light in Mobridge, South Dakota, where a man assaulted two individuals with a knife.

On October 5, 2019, near McLaughlin, South Dakota, Luke Newton Mowrer, age 33, allegedly assaulted two individuals with a knife. One of the victims suffered a cut to the neck, while the other victim had her jacket slashed from the assault.

Mowrer has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on June 8, 2021, and pled not guilty to the Indictment.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is ten years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook is prosecuting the case.

Mowrer was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set.

The charges are merely accusations and Mowrer is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
