⏱ 2 min read

In a sweeping crackdown, 15 individuals, including 11 illegal aliens, were arrested in Massachusetts for their roles in a massive benefit fraud scheme. The defendants, who include Heriberto Rodriguez, Mirian Chalas, and Santo Escolastico Cuello, are charged with defrauding the government of over $1.4 million in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, MassHealth benefits, and disability and unemployment benefits. The arrests were made over the past week in various locations across the state, including Framingham, Salem, Worcester, and Somerville.

The alleged fraudsters used a variety of tactics to scam the system, including using stolen identities, making false statements, and submitting fake claims. Heriberto Rodriguez, for example, is accused of using a stolen identity to claim $546,463 in benefits, including $175,182 in MassHealth benefits and $146,944 in Social Security benefits. Mirian Chalas, a U.S. citizen, is charged with making false statements to claim $266,000 in MassHealth benefits and $25,000 in Social Security Disability benefits.

The investigation and arrests were the result of a collaborative effort between federal and state agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The defendants face a range of charges, including aggravated identity theft, passport fraud, and making false statements relating to a health care program. If convicted, they could face significant prison time and fines.

The arrests are a major blow to those who would seek to exploit the system and defraud the government of vital benefits. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has vowed to continue to crack down on benefit fraud and protect the integrity of the system. As the investigation continues, more arrests and charges are possible.
