Amaurys Arias Arias, Healthcare Benefit Fraud, Massachusetts 2022

⏱ 2 min read

Amaurys Arias Arias, a 44-year-old Dominican national with a rap sheet, is at it again. This time, he’s accused of scamming tens of thousands of dollars in government benefits using a stolen identity. Authorities say Arias used the ID of a U.S. citizen to apply for MassHealth benefits in Brockton, Massachusetts.

It’s alleged that Arias submitted fake documents and swore under oath to the lie, all to get his hands on the cash. And it’s not the first time he’s used the victim’s identity – he’s been arrested multiple times in the past, all in the name of the unsuspecting citizen.

Arias is currently behind bars, awaiting a hearing on April 23. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the healthcare benefit fraud charge. He’s also looking at a mandatory two-year sentence for aggravated identity theft.

This case comes on the heels of a new initiative by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts to combat benefit and voter fraud. The Benefit & Voter Fraud Team will be working to root out scams like this one and bring perpetrators to justice.
