A Baton Rouge bail bondsman has been sentenced to a year in prison for stealing $136,215 in disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Mack Charles Wells, Jr., 49, of Zachary, Louisiana, must also serve a two-year term of supervised release following his incarceration and pay the full amount in restitution to the SSA.
The defendant was convicted of stealing disability benefits from February 2007 through December 2011, a period during which he was working as a bail bondsman with ‘All Day Bail Bonding, LLC’ in Zachary, Louisiana.
Wells, who was collecting disability benefits, fraudulently concealed from SSA that he was working and earning an income as a bail bondsman.
Chief U.S. District Judge Brian A. Jackson handed down the sentence, which includes six months to be served in prison and six months in a half-way house facility.
U.S. Attorney Walt Green stated that theft from government programs will continue to be a priority of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and that today’s sentence addresses the seriousness of the defendant’s conduct.
The investigation was handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Office of Investigations, Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Social Security Administration. The matter is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lyman E. Thornton III.
