Mail Carrier Steals $700 in Rebate Checks
Brittany Freeman, a 27-year-old mail carrier from Johnston City, Illinois, was sentenced to three years’ probation and a $100 fine for stealing over $700 worth of rebate checks from customers along her routes.
Freeman, who worked as a mail carrier in Williamson County, had earlier pleaded guilty to theft of mail by a postal service employee. The stolen checks were sent by Menard’s to customers in February and March 2020.
Surveillance cameras at a nearby Menard’s store captured Freeman using the rebate checks for herself soon after stealing them. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois prosecuted the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Peter T. Reed leading the charge.
According to U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft, tampering with the U.S. mail system is taken seriously, particularly when postal service employees abuse their position of trust. The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General.
Freeman was ordered to pay $704.10 in restitution to her victims as part of her sentence. The incident highlights the importance of monitoring mail and taking steps to prevent theft.
The case serves as a reminder that postal service employees are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity and honesty. Freeman’s actions were a betrayal of that trust, and she will have to live with the consequences of her actions.
