Mail Thief Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison
A Kirbyville man has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for stealing mail and identity information from 82 residents in Newton County, Texas.
William Cody Shaver, 37, pleaded guilty on May 28, 2021, to possession of stolen mail and possession of 15 or more stolen access devices, according to a sentencing order issued by U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone. The prison sentence was handed down in the Eastern District of Texas.
“Many Americans have either been directly affected by mail and identity theft or have a close friend or family member that has been victimized by mail and identity thieves,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. “EDTX is proud to partner with the Postal Inspection Service to safeguard the public’s personal information and to aggressively prosecute those that would seek to steal or profit from such private information.”
The investigation into Shaver began in September 2020, when the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received multiple complaints of stolen mail. Authorities executed a search warrant at Shaver’s residence in Kirbyville on September 25, 2020, and found more than 200 pieces of stolen mail and mail matter, including credit cards, checks, gift cards, personal identification numbers, bank statements, and other miscellaneous items.
The estimated potential loss to the victims of Shaver’s crimes was more than $200,000. Shaver was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 3, 2021. The case was investigated by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan C. Lee.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which was created to protect the U.S. Mail, said it would continue to work tirelessly to find those responsible for mail theft and bring them to justice. “Mail theft is a serious crime, and we will not lose sight of that mission,” said Thomas Noyes, Inspector in Charge of the Fort Worth Division. “We thank the Newton County Sheriff’s Office for their efforts in this case, and we thank the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Texas for pursuing this case through to the end.”
Shaver’s prison sentence serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of mail theft and identity theft crimes. The public is reminded to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to mail theft to the authorities.
