Newport News, Va. – The grimy streets of Newport News witnessed justice served as Stefon I. Malone, 25, was today sentenced to a daunting 17 years in federal prison for his chilling involvement in drug trafficking and the dangerous act of shooting at police officers.
Malone’s sentence includes 84 months for his role in a conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine base, along with an additional 120 months for discharging a firearm during the commission of a drug crime. The combination tally equals more than 8 years of harsh incarceration.
This guilty plea, entered on June 21, 2016, uncovered Malone’s sinister participation in a drug trafficking ring that not only distributed cocaine but also provided security for their operations. On Feb. 28, 2013, the gravity of his actions became shockingly apparent when he opened fire at Newport News Police officers executing a search warrant at a rooming house on Chestnut Avenue.
Malone fired his Glock 9mm pistol with abandon, striking one officer in his ballistic vest and narrowly missing another. Miraculously, both officers survived without serious injury, thanks to their protective gear. The court’s sentence reflects the severity of Malone’s intent to harm law enforcement and disrupt the community’s safety.
The solemn announcement of this sentence was made by Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Karl C. Colder, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Washington Field Division; and Richard Myers, Chief of Newport News Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert E. Bradenham II led the prosecution that resulted in this verdict.
