Man Admits to Firearms Charge
MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Robert Kenneth Niland, a 49-year-old man from Keyser, has admitted to making a false statement to a federal agent.
Niland pled guilty to one count of "False Statement to a Federal Agent" in a West Virginia court. According to investigators, Niland lied to an ATF agent in November 2018.
The case against Niland was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime in communities. PSN focuses on identifying and addressing violent crime problems through a collaborative effort between law enforcement and community stakeholders.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Niland faces up to five years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence will be determined by the seriousness of the offense and Niland’s prior criminal history.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberley D. Crockett is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the case. Niland’s guilty plea marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat violent crime in West Virginia.
The PSN program has been recognized for its effectiveness in reducing violent crime. By targeting the most violent offenders and partnering with prevention and reentry programs, PSN aims to create lasting reductions in crime.
